Osteopathic manipulative treatment for sinusitis relief: A pilot study

Introduction: Sinusitis affects more than 30 million Americans each year, with healthcare costs of $11 billion annually. Few studies explore osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) as an adjunct therapy for sinusitis. Our study aims to investigate the therapeutic benefits and safety OMT sinusitis protocol in relieving symptoms sinusitis.
 Methods: Western University Health Sciences Institutional Review Board approved project. A recruitment flyer was sent out all students from College Osteopathic Medicine Pacific (n=445), 22 subjects volunteered receive OMT. Subjects signed informed consent form prior treatment. Treatment standardized same practitioner a 14-minute protocol. Each subject given survey rate severity pre- post-OMT. Symptoms measured included sinus congestion, postnasal drip, pain, headache, sense smell fatigue. Data analyzed using Wilcoxon rank test, significance determined by P<0.05 95% confidence interval.
 Results: All reported symptomatic relief fatigue after P<0.05. overall improvement No adverse events were reported.
 Conclusion: This concludes that serves safe beneficial option symptoms. The limitations include lack control group small sample size. Future or sham larger size are warranted.
